Severe storms across China have claimed at least 15 lives, with Typhoon Maysak causing devastating floods in the south and tornadoes tearing through central provinces. In Guangxi, the typhoon killed six people and forced the evacuation of 130,000 residents, while in Hubei Province, tornadoes and thunderstorms killed at least 11.
Typhoon Maysak Devastates Guangxi
Typhoon Maysak brought torrential rain and flooding to Guangxi, particularly in Hengzhou, Nanning. The Liulan Reservoir dam breached, submerging houses and trees. The government allocated 100m yuan (about $14m) for disaster relief. Images show rescuers evacuating stranded residents through waist-deep water, and streets turned into rivers. A riverside park in Nanning was completely inundated. In Qingshan, northwest of Hangzhou, a landslide damaged a highway, prompting emergency restoration work.
Tornadoes Strike Hubei Province
On Monday, thunderstorms and tornadoes hit Hubei Province, killing 11 people. In Huanggang City, tornadoes destroyed buildings and a logistics park. Rescue workers cleared debris and helped residents retrieve belongings. The government provided 50m yuan to Hubei for infrastructure restoration. Images show firefighters removing damaged parts of buildings and clean-up operations underway.
