A new study of 2,000 adults has uncovered the most satisfying word to utter after that very first sip of a refreshing pint on a hot UK summer's day — and it's a classic Britishism. Researchers say blurting out "luvverly" is the go-to phrase for instant refreshment.
Regional Variations Across Britain
The research revealed that "luvverly" is the nation's most commonly used first-sip phrase, chosen by 17% of respondents. This timeless British expression, made famous through mid-20th century television and radio, tops the list. However, regional dialects add a unique twist. London drinkers are most likely to let out a cheerful "banger" after a gulp in the sunshine. Beer garden regulars in Scotland tend to nod approvingly and mutter "braw" once their pint hits their lips. In the East Midlands, the first sip isn't complete without saying "bosh," while those in the North West are most likely to declare it "boss."
Other popular expressions include "lush" (10%), "class" (9%), and "phwoar" (7%).
Expert Insights on Dialect
Dr Chris Montgomery, senior lecturer in dialectology at the University of Sheffield, partnered with Strongbow to uncover the history of first-sip language across the country. The cider brand commissioned the research to mark the launch of its 'Refresh the Nation' campaign, celebrating the expressions that make communities across Britain unique.
Dr Montgomery said: "People often talk about regional dialects as if they're disappearing, but these findings suggest the opposite and, if anything, show that reports of Britain's regional dialects dying out have been greatly exaggerated. These expressions are really social badges. They tell us where people are from, the communities they belong to and the local identities they're proud to carry."
He added: "Some of these words have survived for generations, outlasting the industries, jobs and ways of life that first created them. The fact they're still being used to celebrate something as simple as a refreshing first sip shows just how deeply regional language is woven into British culture. In many ways, we're at our most regional when we're expressing happiness. Whether it's reacting to a football result or taking that first cold drink on a hot summer's day, these everyday moments are helping keep local dialects alive."
Perfect First Sip Moments
The survey also found that 31% of Brits say the perfect first sip moment happens on a scorching summer's day, while 22% experience it after a gruelling day at the office. One in five (21%) revealed that taking the first sip of a refreshing drink ranks among the most satisfying everyday moments after a lengthy day, alongside slipping into comfortable clothes (21%) and climbing into bed (22%).
However, this sacred moment can easily be spoiled. A warm drink instantly ruins it for 31% of respondents, while poor company strips away the magic for 22%. Even receiving a plastic cup rather than a proper glass can spoil the moment for 21%, according to the survey conducted by OnePoll.
Celebrating Local Quirks
Max Wainwright at HEINEKEN UK, owner of Strongbow, said: "One of the things I love about Britain is how every corner of the country has its own way of saying things. Growing up in the North West, words like 'boss', 'belter' or 'sound' were just part of everyday life, and it turns out every region has its own version of that. What this research shows is that while the words might change from place to place, the sentiment behind them is exactly the same. Whether you're calling something 'lush', 'proper good' or simply 'luvverly', it's all about sharing a bit of positivity and appreciation. Refreshing The Nation is about celebrating those local quirks and the pride people have in where they're from. There's no single way to sound 'British' and that's exactly what makes Britain such a brilliant place."
