British Gas Urges Using Extractor Fan on Friday

British Gas is urging households to switch on one kitchen appliance when the hot weather returns this week. The energy giant recommends using extractor fans not just for removing odours but also to help keep homes cooler during a heatwave.

Extractor Fans for Cooling

According to British Gas, extractor fans can be put to 'double use' in hot weather by removing warmer air from kitchens or bathrooms and replacing it with cooler air, while also creating airflow. The company advises opening internal doors and leaving extractor fans running for a while, especially after cooking or showering, which can increase humidity and heat.

It is important to open windows and vents elsewhere so that fresh cooler air can enter to replace the warm air expelled by the fan. Once the fan is switched off, internal doors should be shut to prevent warm air from flowing back into cooled rooms.

Weather Forecast

The Met Office predicts that parts of England could see 30°C heat on Friday, particularly in the southeast. Much of the south of England will experience temperatures in the high twenties this week. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree noted that Friday is set to be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures likely ranging from 26 to 28°C, potentially approaching 30°C in parts of southeast England.

However, the weather will be mixed, with thunderstorms for some parts of the UK and a returning heatwave for others. Elsewhere, temperatures will remain closer to average but could be warm in parts of Wales and the west Midlands.

British Gas's advice comes as many households struggle to keep their homes cool, as British houses are built to retain heat rather than remove it. Using extractor fans is a simple and effective way to improve airflow and reduce indoor temperatures.
