Heatwave Prompts Urgent Fridge Adjustments
As the UK experiences its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach 36°C, households are being urged to make three critical changes to their fridges and freezers. The Met Office has issued amber and yellow heat health warnings, particularly for the East of England, where the hottest conditions are expected on Thursday and Friday. Following June being recorded as England's warmest on record, Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, Met Office Chief Scientist, noted: "Human-induced climate change has made events like this more likely and more intense."
Ensure Proper Ventilation Around Appliances
During heatwaves, fridge-freezers work at full capacity to maintain cool temperatures, consuming more energy. To minimize costs and ensure efficiency, BBC Good Food advises: "Check that appliances are far enough from the wall at the back for air to circulate; the manual will have told you how far this should be." Keeping the back of the fridge free from dust and grime also allows air to flow freely around the coils.
Avoid Overpacking the Fridge and Freezer
Refrigerators work more effectively when air can move freely between shelves. Beko states: "It is important to leave enough room for air to circulate the fridge's interior when packing your fridge. If the appliance is crammed with groceries, cold air will not be able to circulate fully, meaning temperatures will vary." Similarly, freezers should not be jam-packed; cold air needs gaps between products to freeze items properly.
Limit Door Openings
Another key tip is to minimize how often fridge and freezer doors are opened. Argos noted: "Each time you open the door, this allows warm air to enter and increases the appliance's workload in maintaining an appropriate internal temperature." This simple habit can reduce energy consumption and help keep food safe during the heatwave.
