Healey Dell Nature Reserve, just two miles from Rochdale town centre, offers a shady woodland walk with waterfalls and historic features, providing respite during the current heatwave when temperatures in Greater Manchester are expected to reach 36°C.
What to Expect at Healey Dell
The reserve follows the River Spodden through woodland, with small waterfalls that once powered wool and cotton mills. Stone bridges cross the river, and the tree canopy provides ample shade. The Fairies Chapel, a rocky gorge with a waterfall, is a notable feature, though its chapel-like formation was damaged by floods in the 1800s.
History and Trails
The disused Rochdale to Bacup railway line, built in 1867 and operated until 1949, now forms part of the National Cycle Network. The Rochdale Way and Pennine Bridleway also pass through the reserve. A 10-foot-tall viaduct with eight arches crosses the River Spodden, offering views from above.
Heritage Centre and Tea Rooms
On the edge of the reserve, the Healey Dell Heritage Centre and Tea Rooms features Edwardian-themed decor with chandeliers. It is open Thursdays from 11am to 3pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm.
