Remove Wooden Floor Scratches with a 10p Walnut Trick

A simple trick using a 10p walnut can help conceal scratches on wooden floors, according to flooring expert Barry Darragh. The natural oils and pigments in walnuts transfer into the wood when rubbed, softening the contrast between the scratch and the surrounding area, making minor scuffs far less noticeable.

Why Walnuts Work on Wooden Floor Scratches

Barry Darragh, director at block wood flooring supplier Wooden Floors, explains: "Walnuts contain natural oils and pigments which can transfer into the surface of the wood when rubbed against it. On lighter scuffs and surface marks, those oils can help soften the contrast between the scratch and the surrounding floor, making it less noticeable." He adds that while it won't remove deep scratches, it's a handy trick for the little marks that catch your eye in sunlight.

With bags of walnuts typically costing £2-£3, each walnut works out at around 10p, making it a more affordable option than specialist scratch pens, repair kits, or professional restoration for minor blemishes.

Summer Sunlight Reveals Hidden Scratches

As days get brighter and natural light floods homes, minor blemishes that went undetected during darker months become far more noticeable. Darragh notes: "Wooden floors can very easily disguise small marks when there's less light coming into your home but when the sun comes out and the curtains are open for longer, you start seeing every little scuff and scratch."

Summer also increases wear and tear: moving dining chairs for extra guests, bringing outdoor furniture through the house, or rearranging rooms for BBQs and gatherings can cause small scuffs, especially if grit or dirt is caught under furniture feet.

How to Apply the Walnut Trick

To hide scratches and restore your floor's appearance, take the inside of a walnut and gently rub it along the scratch, following the direction of the wood grain for the best finish. Leave the area undisturbed for a few minutes to allow the natural oils to absorb, then buff with a soft cloth. The floor should look significantly better.
