High Force Tops UK Waterfall Rankings
High Force in County Durham has been named the UK's top 'must-visit' location in a new list of impressive waterfalls, according to outdoor retailer Go Outdoors. The 22-metre waterfall, located in Teesdale within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, was praised for its mighty flow of water and natural charm.
Study Highlights Top 10 Waterfalls
The study by Go Outdoors evaluated 15 waterfall walks across Britain. High Force beat competitors such as the Falls of Glomach in Scotland, the tallest in Britain, and Pistyll Rhaeadr in Wales, one of the 'seven wonders of Wales'. The top 10 list includes Steall Falls in Glen Nevis, Hardraw Force in Yorkshire Dales, Aira Force in the Lake District, Ingleton Waterfall Trail, Waterfall Country in Brecon Beacons, Becky Falls in Dartmoor, and St Nectan's Glen in Cornwall.
Go Outdoors said: "As temperatures across the UK continue to rise, outdoor experts have named the UK’s best waterfalls." About High Force, they added: "Now that’s a proper name for a waterfall, isn’t it?"
Walking Route and Facilities
High Force offers a 'moderate' walk of just over 11km (about 6.8 miles), lasting around three hours and 20 minutes. The route takes in open, woodland, and rocky ground. A well-maintained path through woodland leads to the waterfall, with impressive views of the River Tees. Viewing platforms provide safe spots to take in the scenery. The site also has a visitor centre, car park, and facilities.
Natalie Wolfenden, author and outdoor enthusiast at Go Outdoors, said: “Waterfalls offer beautiful scenery and an escape into nature, making them a great choice for a summer walk.” She added: “Taking a little time to prepare will help ensure you can enjoy everything these stunning waterfalls have to offer.”
Additional North East Location
Another North East site, Hareshaw Linn in Northumberland, was ranked 12th. It features a 'relatively easy' three-mile woodland walk lasting about an hour and a half, with opportunities to spot great spotted woodpeckers and red squirrels.
Tips for Visitors
Go Outdoors advises planning well with water supplies, proper footwear, and waterproofs. They noted: "The best thing about waterfalls is that they’re actually more impressive in the rain - so don’t let the great British weather hold you back."
