Kent Family's Dog Makes History with Record-Breaking Litter
A family from Blean, Kent, has been left utterly astonished after their beloved dog gave birth to a staggering 17 puppies, setting what is believed to be a new UK record. The gruelling labour lasted an exhausting 13 hours, leaving the two-year-old Irish Setter, named Marigold, and her owners in a state of shock and delight.
Marathon Birth and Immediate Aftermath
Miranda Pellecchia, 42, described the remarkable events of January 2, when Marigold began delivering the enormous brood at 11am and continued until midnight. "We knew she was going to have a big litter, but we were amazed when they just kept coming," Ms Pellecchia explained. "Just when we thought it was all over, out would pop another one."
Marigold, who was mated with a miniature black poodle, has now likely produced Britain's largest ever litter of Irish Doodles, surpassing the previous record of 16 puppies born in Hampshire in 2019. The puppies, now nearly eight weeks old, are all in robust health, thanks to their weary mother's diligent nursing.
Demanding Care and Family Chaos
To sustain her energy and milk production, Marigold requires a staggering 12 tins of dog food each day. Ms Pellecchia, a mother-of-three who works as a mediator in special educational needs cases, said life at home has descended into joyful chaos. "What with the feeding - because they needed extra formula milk - weighing and general care and attention, I've not been getting much sleep," she admitted.
The family's children—Freddie, 13, Orlando, 11, and Coco, nine—have been thrilled by the adorable additions, with friends eagerly visiting to see the puppies. Even the family's other dog, a black Labrador named Monty, has taken the drama in stride, amusingly behaving as if he were the father.
Veterinary Amazement and Future Plans
Veterinarians were equally stunned by the litter's size. "They said they never heard of a litter so big - so they are excited about seeing them," Ms Pellecchia noted. The puppies, all named by the family, will receive vaccinations, micro-chipping, and health checks as they turn eight weeks old.
From that point, Ms Pellecchia will offer the puppies for sale at £1,300 each, with significant interest already expressed. "Obviously, we're going to miss them because they're adorable, but I'm also looking forward to getting my life back because it's been enormously demanding," she reflected.
Background on the Irish Doodle Breed
The Irish Doodle is a relatively modern crossbreed, originating in the United States in the late 20th century as part of the designer dog trend, similar to the Labradoodle. Bred to combine the Irish Setter's athleticism with the poodle's intelligence and low-shedding coat, these dogs are cherished for their:
- Friendly and affectionate temperament
- Energetic and playful nature
- Ideal suitability as family companions
This record-breaking event highlights both the joys and challenges of dog breeding, showcasing a remarkable feat of canine motherhood that has captivated the local community and beyond.
