Best Time to Water Garden in Hot Weather to Avoid Irreversible Damage
Best Time to Water Garden in Hot Weather

Gardeners are being urged to water their plants during a specific window in the late afternoon or early evening to prevent irreversible damage during hot weather. According to gardening specialists at Blooming Expert, the optimal time is between 4 pm and 6 pm, when there is still daylight and warmth but the sun is less intense.

Why Evening Watering Is Recommended

The primary reason for evening watering is to minimize evaporation. Water applied in the morning or midday can quickly evaporate under the hot sun, leaving plants thirsty. By watering in the late afternoon, plants have a chance to absorb moisture before the cooler night sets in. The experts warn that delaying watering until the next morning could cause "irreversible damage" to stressed plants.

One gardener on the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page shared: "I do evenings. When the sun sets over the house. Between five and 5:30pm." Another added: "I like to water in the evenings. It gives the plants overnight to drink."

Disease Prevention and Watering Techniques

While evening watering is beneficial, gardeners must avoid wetting the foliage. Wet leaves overnight can promote fungal diseases. The key is to water at the root zone, directing water to the soil rather than spraying the leaves. Overhead watering should be avoided, especially in the evening.

One commenter noted: "Shouldn't leave a lawn damp overnight on purpose (obvs can't help if it rained), can lead to more disease growth, and middle of the day, it just evaporates and can't soak into the ground."

Water Needs Vary by Plant and Soil

The amount of water required depends on the plant type, soil composition, and location. Most plants in spring get sufficient moisture from rainfall, but during summer heat, they need extra watering. Container plants and those in sandy soil may require more frequent watering.

A fourth gardener remarked: "Water in the evening - the plant and soil retain more moisture. Watering in the morning or afternoon allows the water to evaporate, so less water is held in the soil for the roots."

For lawns, some prefer early morning sprinklers to avoid dampness overnight, but for garden plants, evening watering is widely endorsed by experts and enthusiasts alike.
