Weeds are among the biggest problems in gardens, often reappearing quickly between patio slabs and paving. While hand-pulling is common, it can be tiresome. This year, weeds seem to have sprouted more than ever on paved areas.
One gardener, Mia O'Hare, decided to try a natural homemade weed killer after seeing a hack online. She mixed white vinegar, salt, and washing-up liquid in a spray bottle—all items commonly found in kitchen cupboards. The solution cost nothing to make and avoids harsh chemicals.
O'Hare tested the mixture on different parts of her patio, giving the weeds a good spray and leaving them for 24 hours. The results were impressive: the weeds had shrivelled and died, making them much easier to remove than if they were still alive.
The homemade weed killer is best used on a sunny day to prevent rain from washing it away. It should not be used on weeds in soil, as it can make the area acidic; it is ideal for patio areas. For larger weeds, the mixture can be poured directly onto the plant.
To make the solution, pour white vinegar and salt into a spray bottle or jug, stir until dissolved, then add washing-up liquid and stir well. Remove any insects from the weed before spraying the leaves thoroughly. The weeds will begin to wilt within a few hours and should be fully dead after 24 hours.
