30 Unexpected Daily Mood Boosters That Bring Brits Joy Revealed
30 Unexpected Mood Boosters That Bring Brits Joy

A survey of 2,000 UK adults who work Monday to Friday has revealed the top 30 unexpected daily mood boosters that bring Brits joy. The research, commissioned by Gala, found that 33% of respondents actively look for 'little unexpected joys' to make a dreary day better. On average, people experience at least three such moments per week, with 21% relying on them most in the middle of the week to brighten their day.

Top Unexpected Joys

The most common joy-boosting moments include discovering a parking space without circling around, realising it's Thursday when you thought it was Wednesday, and uncovering a £10 note in a pair of jeans you haven't worn for ages. Other highlights include arriving home just before it starts raining, a delivery arriving within the scheduled time, and remembering to bring bags to the supermarket.

Additional joys cited by respondents include completing everything on a to-do list (19%), discovering a TV series with episodes already available (17%), and learning that the following Monday is a bank holiday (17%). More than a fifth (22%) find their energy levels start high at the beginning of the week but gradually drop off by the end. However, 69% said Monday is their least favourite day, with 51% generally disliking or hating it.

Negative Impact Factors

Work-related stress (27%), fatigue or low energy (22%), and technology failures had the greatest negative impact on how people feel throughout the day. In contrast, time-related victories—such as skipping queues or leaving work early—have the most significant positive effect on mood (26%). Thirty-three percent of participants in the OnePoll.com study revealed that an 'unexpected win' frequently lifts their spirits for the remainder of the day.

Gala's 'Push for Joy' Campaign

To bring a little extra joy, Gala launched a 'Push for Joy' button on the streets of Manchester this week. The oversized button invites members of the public to press it for a chance to win joy-related prizes, including a holiday. The button will head to Brighton on 13th July. A spokesperson for Gala said: "Sometimes it is the little things that can give you the most joy. In a busy week, those unexpected moments can help shift your mindset and add a bit of lightness to your day. It can also make the feeling even more rewarding when it comes when you least expect them. It's a reminder that even on the most routine days, there are still opportunities to find small pockets of happiness."

The spokesperson added: "It's clear that people don't need big milestones to feel better, it's often the quick, everyday wins that make the biggest difference. A small boost at the right moment can shift your mindset entirely and help you move through the day in a more positive way."
