Widow's Bay Finale Recap: Twists and Ending Explained

The tenth and final episode of Widow's Bay Season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV+. The show has become such a hit that Google even added a special Easter Egg: searching the title shows a message reading, "Did you mean: the next Martha's Vineyard and definitely not cursed," a nod to the main character's obsession with turning the island into a tourist hotspot.

What Happened at the End of Widow's Bay?

Mayor Tom (Matthew Rhys) discovers that his secretary, Ruth, is the last remaining descendant of Richard Warren. He searches her medical files hoping to find a terminal illness, but she is healthy aside from a warning about mixing medications. Tom, Patricia, and Wyck debate whether to kill Ruth to end the curse. Tom drugs her tea, but it acts as a truth serum instead.

Ruth confesses to an affair with a married man, resulting in a pregnancy. She gave the baby to the man and his wife, forcing her to watch from afar. That baby was Tom's wife, Lauren. Ruth kept her job to be near her grandson, Tom's son. This means Tom's own child is the last descendant of Richard Warren. Ruth shows a family heirloom: Sarah Warren's brooch, and reveals she told Lauren she was her "secret mother" during visits.

Sheriff Bechir bursts in and shoots Ruth, but Tom refuses to tell him who the real descendant is. Bechir, paranoid after discovering the curse is real, acted to protect his unborn child, which cannot leave the island if born there.

Meanwhile, at the shelter, Dale finds videos revealing its true purpose. A man addresses viewers as "offerings," thanking them for their sacrifice. Other videos show tied-up people with bags on their heads, with the man saying the Island "likes the taste of fear." He mentions a covenant with the Island, stating the "bad times" will not end until it is honored: "One soul for each bell toll." Dale returns and shouts that the place is a death trap.

Evan and friends find a room with a restraint chair. Maintenance guy Kenny discovers them, and PJ locks him inside. Evan tries to help, but Kenny screams. The storm stops, and the door unlocks. Evan finds Kenny's torch near huge doors left slightly open.

The next morning, Tom throws Ruth's brooch into the calm waters. As he returns to his car with his son, the bell tolls eight times. Kenny was the first sacrifice; more are needed. Fans will have to wait for Season 2 to see how this plays out.
