Kym Marsh Leads Twisted Drama The Imposter on Channel 5

Kym Marsh, best known for playing Michelle Connor on Coronation Street for over a decade, has captivated Channel 5 viewers in the Australian drama 'The Imposter'. The four-episode series is packed with rivalries, treachery, and murder.

Plot Overview

Marsh portrays Amanda, the hidden daughter of family patriarch Helen (Jackie Woodburne), who was given up for adoption in the UK. When Amanda unexpectedly arrives in Australia years later, Helen welcomes her—but questions arise about her true identity.

The synopsis reads: "A sprawling seaside hotel sits at the heart of a dispute between matriarch Helen and her three adult children, Simon, Kate and Ian. The kids want to sell, but Helen is against the lucrative deal, despite her ailing health. But Helen also has a secret – an older child, Amanda, whom she gave up for adoption in the UK before the other kids were born. When Amanda turns up out of the blue, Helen embraces her, believing she is the answer to her problems. But is Amanda who she says she is? The lucrative hotel is the ultimate prize, and a twisted scheme soon spirals into betrayal and ultimately, murder."

Cast and Reception

Alongside Marsh and Woodburne, the cast includes Don Hany, Dannii Minogue, and Jackson Gallagher. Despite mixed reviews, many viewers have been impressed and are eager for more episodes. Discussing her role, Marsh told the Manchester Evening News: "She's a complex, multi-layered individual. I think she's quite damaged; there's a lot in her past that eventually shows through and can't be hidden. Many difficult things have probably happened to her that we'll never fully know. But she's also cunning and resilient; she's a survivor, and she's quite funny."

She added: "I can't really draw on any personal experience for this role. Some of the things she does are so far removed from my own life that I couldn't take anything from myself, and in a way, that was quite nice. It meant I could allow myself to go to places I'd never normally go. I had free rein with her, really."
