Elton John Adds Mexico City Dates, Delays Retirement

Sir Elton John has announced he is coming out of retirement once more, adding two new dates to his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. The 79-year-old singer will perform at Banorte Stadium in Mexico City on 2 and 3 October 2026, extending a tour that originally began in 2018 and was set to conclude in 2023.

New Tour Dates Announced

In a social media post, Elton John said: "I am excited to announce that I will be performing two nights at Banorte Stadium on 2 and 3 October. Mexico City has always held a special place in my heart." He added that the pandemic had forced him to scrap some Latin American dates, making this return especially meaningful: "I was truly disappointed that the pandemic kept me from touring Latin America during my Farewell tour which makes this return especially meaningful. I'm thrilled to finally share this very special moment with my fans after all these years."

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour was announced in 2018 with 330 dates. At the time, Elton John said: "It's time to come off the road so I can fully embrace the next important chapter of my life. I need to dedicate more time to raising my children." The tour was set to begin in Pennsylvania in September 2018 and visit 10 UK cities in 2020, but those dates were postponed due to the pandemic. The tour officially finished in 2023, with his final UK show headlining Glastonbury Festival. He said then: "There is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans."

Family Life and Retirement

Elton John has two sons with his husband David Furnish, whom he legally married in 2014. Their sons are Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, born in December 2010 (now 15), and Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John, born on 11 January 2013 (now 13). Speaking to Attitude in 2024, Elton reflected on his decision to stop touring: "We went to Glastonbury, and we smashed it there, and when I did the last show in Stockholm, I got in the car and David said, 'How do you feel?' I went, 'I'm so happy.' I understand why Adele wants to stop because there's more to life. I've done nearly over 5,000 shows in my life and I've done all there is to do, and so I just knew that my boys and David needed me, and I need them."

Impact of Fatherhood

In the same interview, he spoke about how fatherhood changed him: "When David first started managing me and we were talking about a five or six-year plan, he said, 'Well, you always said you were going to die on the stage because we didn't have anything else.' We were two affluent gay people going around the world with a nice philanthropic side to us, but there was no other purpose other than that. Having the children changed everything for the better because now it's all about them. It's all about their welfare and their future and it's not about me and it's not about him. We're very comfortable in our relationship. We get better and better and better, but it's the children that just really inspire us and it's the most wonderful time of my life at the moment, and that's pretty amazing."
