Dad Names Kids After TV Characters, Fears He Ruined Their Lives

A father has ignited a heated debate after revealing he named his children after characters from his favourite television shows, and now worries the unusual monikers may negatively impact their futures.

Father's Naming Choices Spark Controversy

In a Reddit post, the man explained that his firstborn son was named after his maternal grandfather, breaking a family tradition that required him to pass on his own first name. His father was reportedly annoyed by this decision.

He then named his daughter Samantha, after the character Sam Winchester from the cult series Supernatural. She is commonly called Sammy. The father stated that Supernatural had a major impact on his life, especially during a two-year period of bed rest following an accident in 2006. He described the show as a powerful emotional outlet.

Anime-Inspired Name Draws Criticism

His wife chose the name for their third son, but the father got to name their fourth child. He selected Broly, a character from the Dragon Ball franchise. This choice drew sharp criticism from Reddit users.

One commenter predicted the child would be bullied, saying, "Poor kid will likely end up being unceremoniously bullied for it bless him." Another noted that if peers know Dragon Ball, they might call him Broccoli or give him broccoli whenever they see him.

A user warned, "Typically not a good idea to name your kids after Saiyans given that their names are based on vegetables." Another added, "Broly? Ouch. That kid's gonna have a hard time in school."

Unequal Naming Rights Questioned

Several commenters questioned why the father named three children while the mother named only one. One user asked, "Why did your wife only get to name one kid and you got to name three?" Another remarked, "Especially since she is the one birthing them and giving her body for the children."

A final comment noted, "I mean, both parents should have a say but if one gets priority it definitely should be the mother as they are the one who has to be pregnant and give birth."
