Carol McGiffin Dismisses Loose Women Comeback Speculation
Longtime Loose Women panellist Carol McGiffin has emphatically shut down rumours of a potential return to the ITV daytime chat show. The broadcaster, who first joined the programme in 2000 and made her final appearance in 2023, stated there is "no chance" of her ever rejoining the panel.
Definitive Statement on Instagram
McGiffin addressed recent media speculation directly on her Instagram account, writing: "Just wanted to say I did not instigate this article but I’m flattered that [they] even ask the question ‘could she save the show’!!! And, for the record, not a chance of a return." She elaborated that she is "very happy" with her current semi-retired lifestyle, enjoying life with her husband Mark Cassidy in the South of France.
Contentious Ukraine Debate with Co-Star
The television personality revealed that during her final years on the programme, she engaged in a "massive, massive, massive row" with fellow panellist Kaye Adams over the conflict in Ukraine. McGiffin explained she refused to outright support Ukraine during the early stages of the Russian invasion, preferring to examine historical context rather than take sides.
"I wasn't on anyone's side, I wanted to look at what had happened historically and what might be the reason for this," McGiffin stated during an appearance on the Heretics podcast. She criticized what she perceived as "intolerance" from both the show and left-leaning perspectives, ultimately disclosing that her disagreement was with Adams, one of the programme's original anchors since 1999.
Lengthy Tenure and Recent Departure
Carol McGiffin's association with Loose Women spanned significant periods from 2000 to 2013 and again from 2018 to 2023, during which she made approximately 1,500 appearances. She often shared the panel with other long-serving stars including Coleen Nolan, Jane McDonald, and Nadia Sawalha.
Her 2023 departure followed a two-month absence from the show, with McGiffin expressing that she was "upset" to leave. Prior to her exit, disagreements reportedly emerged between the presenter and ITV management concerning free speech and expression on the programme.
Reflections on Changing Television Landscape
In interviews following her departure, McGiffin contrasted contemporary television with earlier eras of her career. "I always look back at when I started working in television and radio as the good old days because they were much less policed," she remarked, adding that today's environment features "so much offence" compared to the more free-spirited atmosphere of earlier Loose Women episodes.
Personal Life and Additional Controversies
The former Celebrity Big Brother contestant, who was famously married to TFI Friday host Chris Evans in the 1990s before marrying Mark Cassidy nearly a decade ago, also addressed personal questions about motherhood. She batted away suggestions that she should have children, stating she felt no obligation to do so.
McGiffin's comments come as Loose Women, along with fellow ITV Daytime programme Lorraine, has been reduced to 30 weeks of broadcasting annually amid budget constraints at the network. Despite speculation about her potential return to revitalize the show, McGiffin remains firmly committed to her retirement from the programme that made her a household name.
