BBC News at Six and Ten Rescheduled Due to World Cup and Starmer Resignation

The BBC was forced to reschedule its flagship News at Six and News at Ten programmes on Monday after Prime Minister Keir Starmer's resignation coincided with the broadcaster's coverage of two World Cup matches.

Schedule Changes Due to World Cup Clash

BBC One's normal evening news bulletins were replaced by special broadcasts to accommodate live football. The 6pm news was moved to a 4.30pm special, while the News at Ten aired at 8.30pm instead. The BBC's schedule on Monday featured Argentina versus Austria at 5.30pm and France versus Iraq at 10pm, leaving no room for other programmes.

BBC Statement on Rescheduling

A BBC spokesperson said: "The News at Six and Ten has been rescheduled today because of the World Cup. We’ll have live coverage on BBC One all afternoon with the latest on the PM’s resignation, plus BBC News Specials at 16:30–17:30 and 20:30–21:30, presented by @SophieRaworth from Downing Street."

Impact on Viewers

The double-header of World Cup matches on BBC One meant rolling news coverage and football dominated the channel from afternoon through the night. Viewers tuning in for the usual evening news were instead directed to the earlier specials. The Prime Minister's resignation, announced earlier in the day, prompted the BBC to adjust its plans amid the packed sporting schedule.
