An Australian television presenter has issued a public apology after slurring her words during a live broadcast from the Winter Olympics, openly admitting that she had 'had a drink' before going on-air. The incident occurred during a segment for the popular Australian breakfast programme Today, which cut to reporter Danika Mason standing outside in a snowstorm in Livigno, Italy.
Bizarre Live Segment from Winter Olympics
Producers of the Today show had directed Mason to deliver an update on the overnight performances of Australian athletes competing at the Winter Games. However, the broadcast took an unexpected turn when Mason began to ramble incoherently about the price of coffee in Italy before making a bizarre, unrelated comment about iguanas.
'The price of coffee over here is actually fine...' Mason stated during the live segment. 'It's actually the price of coffee in the US we have to get used to... I'm not sure about the iguanas? Where are we going with that one?'
Confused Transition to Sports Coverage
Mason then attempted to transition to discussing sports news, mentioning the Brisbane Broncos rugby league team who have travelled to the United Kingdom to face Super League champions Hull KR in the World Club Challenge match scheduled for Thursday evening. Throughout this segment, her speech was noticeably slurred, and she concluded by performing a snow angel in the powder behind her.
Back in the studio in Australia, Today show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Jayne Azzopardi observed that Mason had stumbled over her sentences. They suggested that the extremely chilly conditions in Livigno might have made it difficult for her to speak clearly. 'There is such a cold wind, you can't actually move your lips,' Stefanovic claimed in an attempt to explain the situation.
Public Apology Issued on Air
Danika Mason later apologised for the bizarre moment during another live crossover on Thursday evening from Livigno. After discussing the day's events, the Australian presenter took a moment to acknowledge Wednesday's problematic segment, stating she had 'misjudged the situation' before adding that the cold conditions, high altitude, and not having eaten dinner 'didn't help'.
'And guys, just before we do go, I just want to take a moment if that's okay, just to apologise,' she began. 'I also wanted to say thank you for everyone who has reached out. I'm okay. Probably just a little bit embarrassed.'
Taking Full Responsibility
'Look, I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn't have had a drink. And especially in these conditions, it's cold. We've got altitude. And not having had dinner probably didn't help as well,' Mason continued. 'But I want to take full responsibility. It's not the standard that I set for myself. So in saying that, I am genuinely sorry.'
Today show host Karl Stefanovic, who himself had made a drunken appearance on the programme after the 2009 Logie Awards, praised Mason for her admirable and forthright apology. 'I don't even know what you're talking about,' Stefanovic said supportively. 'You're the best, Danika. Don't worry about it. Let's move on.'
The incident has sparked discussions about professionalism in live broadcasting, particularly under challenging environmental conditions at major international events like the Winter Olympics. Further updates on this developing story are expected to follow as reactions continue to emerge from viewers and media commentators alike.
