Game of Thrones star Indira Varma has said that opportunities for older female actors are becoming 'smaller and smaller'. The 51-year-old actress, known for roles in Luther and Obi-Wan Kenobi, told The Sunday Times's Culture magazine that only a 'few people' get these roles and called for 'more stories' about older women.
Varma, who also appeared in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, said she feels less pressure to 'look extraordinary' as she ages. 'I'm healthy, I'm strong and the older I get the less I feel pressure on me as a woman to look extraordinary,' she said.
The Olivier award-winning actress expressed a desire for more substantial screen roles, similar to those she receives on stage. 'I'd love opportunities on screen that I get on stage. Something that has an emotional journey in it, that has an inner and an outer life, not just expositional shoe leather,' she added.
Varma is set to star alongside Rami Malek in a new London production of Oedipus at the Old Vic Theatre. Her recent stage work includes playing Lady Macbeth opposite Ralph Fiennes in a UK production last year.
The actress's comments come amid ongoing discussions about ageism in Hollywood. While some recent awards ceremonies have recognised older actresses, Varma's remarks highlight the persistent challenges faced by women over 40 in the industry.
