Two Met Police Officers Charged Over Fatal Crash That Killed Pregnant Woman and Baby
Two Metropolitan Police officers have been formally charged following a devastating collision that resulted in the deaths of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The incident occurred on October 17, 2024, on the A20 in Eltham, southeast London, when an unmarked police car travelling at 80mph—double the speed limit—collided with Mariam Ahmed's vehicle.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Mariam Ahmed, a 38-year-old resident of Woolwich, was 39 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash. She tragically lost her life along with her baby after the police Volvo, driven by PC Chris Johnson, 56, ploughed into her car at approximately 6.15pm. The officers were in pursuit of a rider on a stolen motorbike, operating separate unmarked vehicles during the operation.
An inquest held last year revealed that the police car had been travelling at 80mph on a road with a 40mph speed limit, highlighting the severe nature of the incident. PC Johnson has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins, 35, faces a charge of dangerous driving. Both individuals are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 28 May.
Investigation and Response
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a comprehensive investigation into the crash, which has been described as thorough and complex by authorities. Acting Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham, who leads policing in Greenwich, expressed deep condolences, stating: 'Our thoughts remain with the woman's family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident.'
He further emphasised the importance of maintaining the integrity of the upcoming court proceedings, noting: 'It is important that nothing is said that could prejudice the court proceedings that will now follow, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.' The Met Police have cooperated closely with the IOPC throughout the enquiry process.
Background of the Officers Involved
PC Chris Johnson is currently attached to the Met's Taskforce, a specialised unit within the police force. Former PC Danny Tomkins was also part of the same unit at the time of the incident but has since left the service. The community response to the tragedy was marked by an outpouring of grief, with locals laying flowers at the scene near the A20 and Kidbrooke Park Road in Eltham.
Mariam Ahmed is survived by her husband and two daughters, adding to the profound loss experienced by her family. The case underscores ongoing concerns about police pursuit protocols and road safety measures in high-speed scenarios.
