The creator of the acclaimed Hulu series Tell Me Lies has officially confirmed that the season finale, which premiered today, February 17, marks the definitive end of the show. In a heartfelt and bittersweet social media announcement, showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer revealed that this episode concludes the three-season run of the drama, which first debuted in 2022.
A Turbulent Romance Comes to a Close
Tell Me Lies is set in the late 2000s at the fictional Baird College, chronicling the intense and manipulative relationship between freshman Lucy Albright, portrayed by Grace Van Patten, and college junior Stephen DaMarco, played by Jackson White. Interestingly, the lead actors are also a real-life couple off-screen, adding a layer of authenticity to their on-screen chemistry.
The series meticulously explores how their toxic, on-again-off-again romance creates a devastating ripple effect of lies, betrayal, and emotional trauma within their wider circle of friends. As the narrative progresses through time jumps across the seasons, it poignantly depicts the lasting emotional scars inflicted on both characters, highlighting the profound impact of their connection.
Creator's Decision to End the Series
Taking to Instagram, screenwriter and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer elaborated on the decision. "After three amazing seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight’s episode will be the series finale," she stated. "This was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind, and we are insanely proud of it."
Oppenheimer acknowledged the overwhelming fan response to the latest season, which prompted considerations about extending the story. However, she emphasized that the creative team ultimately felt the narrative had reached its natural conclusion. "Your incredible response to this season inspired us to explore whether there was another organic way to continue the story, but ultimately we felt it had reached its natural conclusion," she explained.
Her primary objective, she noted, was to preserve the show's quality and deliver the best possible experience for viewers. The decision was also influenced by the characters' progression beyond their college years. Oppenheimer, 39, pointed out that since the protagonists are no longer in school, continuing the series would fundamentally alter its essence, potentially turning it into something she no longer believed in.
Cast Reactions and Fan Backlash
Lead actress Grace Van Patten, 29, shared her sentiments with Deadline, describing the finale as "bittersweet." She expressed gratitude for the rare opportunity to develop the story over three complete seasons. "I think it’s so beautiful and rare that we got to do this for three seasons. We got really lucky that everybody loved the show and we were able to keep going, and it was so great. We were able to have a beginning, middle and end," she remarked.
Despite the show's popularity, evidenced by its consistent placement in Hulu's Top 15 most-watched shows for over 50 consecutive days during its second season, fans were left heartbroken by the announcement. Many took to Oppenheimer's Instagram post to voice their dismay, pleading for more episodes beyond the finale.
Fan comments included:
- "You could have at least made some more episodes this season instead of 8."
- "I'M ACTUALLY UPSET WHAT THE HELL."
- "Can’t wait to see how it’s going to end, but ngl, I am going to miss the show."
- "So you’re just breaking up with us?!"
- "Nothing will be answered we have so many unfinished storylines like come on."
- "I’m going to need the number of a support group."
