Viewers of the long-running BBC crime drama Silent Witness have erupted in anger following the broadcast of its latest episode, with many declaring they are "finished" with the series and launching scathing criticism at the broadcaster. The show, which stars Emilia Fox, David Caves, Maggie Steed, and Francesca Mills as a team of forensic pathology experts, aired a new installment on Wednesday, February 18, but it left a significant portion of its audience far from impressed.
Episode Plot Sparks Controversy and Political Backlash
The episode, titled The Enemy Within, centred on a stabbing incident in Birmingham that initially appeared to have racial motivations. A video surfaced branding the victim as a "racist pig" and threatening the "end of white people," only for it to be revealed as a deepfake—AI technology used to maliciously fabricate human likeness. The story concluded on an ominous note, hinting at potential ramifications for character Jack Hodgson, played by David Caves.
Taking to social media platform X, viewers did not hold back in their disapproval. One user wrote, "What the hell was that ending? Keir Starmer and the woke left must have written that script! Absolute garbage from the BBC turned a decent series into lefty claptrap. Fair to say I won't be watching another episode again... #silentwitness." Another commented, "Blimey some might think that Starmer wrote this episode or at least the last 15 minutes #SilentWitness," while a third stated, "I have just managed 1min 20secs of #SilentWitness that's me finished with it. Typical BBC lies and propaganda. #DefundTheBBC." A fourth viewer concurred, saying, "More biased drama feeding the narrative from @BBC #SilentWitness can’t wait for the drama dealing with the grooming gangs."
Relocation to Birmingham Divides Audience Opinion
This backlash is not the first time viewers have taken issue with the current series of Silent Witness. A significant point of contention has been the show's move from its original London setting to Birmingham, with some fans expressing strong disapproval on X. One person remarked, "Moving this show to Birmingham was a BIG mistake. Just like when they moved Waterloo Road to Scotland. This show needs London. Film it in Birmingham if you have to, but at least pretend it’s in London because this is AWFUL and it’s completely lost its way." Another asked, "Why was it moved to Birmingham from London? Totally ruined the show," while a third noted, "Loving this so far but, but the Lyell," referencing the team's former headquarters. A fourth viewer quipped, "Now Silent Witness has moved to Birmingham, it seems to have got confused with Peaky Blinders."
However, not all feedback was negative regarding the relocation. Some viewers welcomed the change, with one declaring, "Yay new Silent Witness, I think moving to Birmingham was good, brings some freshness to the show." A second viewer agreed, saying, "Love the Bowman Centre and the shots of Birmingham are superb! The show has hit the ground running in their new town."
Background on the Episode and Series Context
The two-part episodes were initially pulled and aired later than originally planned due to a real-life stabbing incident in Birmingham, adding a layer of sensitivity to the broadcast. In the first story of series 29, titled The Disappearance of Alice Hill, lead characters Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson hunted down a suspected hitman across Birmingham. Upon apprehending him, he claimed responsibility for a high-profile murder for which someone else was serving time. Alice Hill, presumed dead with her body never found, had her husband, Jason Webb, arrested and sentenced for the murder despite his protests of innocence. He was released after the hitman's confession, but the plot soon revealed that things were not as straightforward as they seemed.
Silent Witness, now in its 29th series, continues to air on BBC One and is available for streaming on iPlayer, but this latest episode has undoubtedly stirred debate among its loyal fanbase.
