Shirley MacLaine, 91, Enjoys Cocktail Lunch in Malibu Ahead of New Film
Shirley MacLaine's Malibu outing at 91 with cocktail

Hollywood legend Shirley MacLaine proved age is just a number as she stepped out for a rare outing in Malibu this week, enjoying a refreshing cocktail during a leisurely lunch with friends.

A Relaxing Malibu Outing

The 91-year-old Oscar winner made a stylish appearance at Kristy's Village Cafe on Tuesday, where she enjoyed a tasty meal accompanied by close companions. MacLaine looked effortlessly chic in a dark navy sweatshirt and fashionable sunglasses as she sat at an outdoor table, engaging in lighthearted conversation ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

A vibrant yellow drink sat beside the actress as she chatted with her friends, demonstrating her well-known appreciation for cocktails. This isn't the first time MacLaine has shown her fondness for evening drinks - late last year, it emerged that The Apartment star was searching for a personal assistant who could enjoy a cocktail with her each evening.

Recovery and Resilience

Earlier this month, the resilient actress was spotted recovering from a minor slip as she treated herself to an upscale lunch at Lucky's Steakhouse, also located in the coastal paradise of Malibu. During that outing, MacLaine donned an eye-catching ensemble featuring a green Palm Spring sweatshirt paired with green cargo pants.

She layered the casual look with a vibrant red hoodie and completed the outfit with matching red shoes, proving her fashion sense remains as sharp as ever. The award-winning star celebrated her 91st birthday back in April, showing no signs of slowing down in her tenth decade.

Secrets to Longevity and Continuing Career

During an interview with People last year, MacLaine opened up about the secrets behind her remarkable longevity and enduring career. She credited her extensive dance background, which began when her mother enrolled her in ballet classes at just three years old.

"I started my dance training at age three and stopped at about 67," MacLaine revealed. "It taught me discipline, loving music, working with people and dealing with pain."

The actress expressed gratitude for her continued ability to work, stating she's thankful "that I can keep working" while adding, "I have my friends and I am really healthy."

MacLaine's career shows no signs of winding down, with Variety reporting earlier this month that she's set to star alongside Ansel Elgort in the upcoming road trip comedy Lucy Boomer. The film will be directed by Howard Deutch, known for Pretty In Pink, with principal photography scheduled to begin next February in New Mexico.

Benaroya Pictures CEO Michael Benaroya expressed excitement about the project, stating: "We couldn't be more excited to add Lucy Boomer to our slate. It has all the ingredients distributors will love: a moving story, a terrific director in Howie Deutch, a stellar lead in Ansel Elgort, and, of course, the legendary Shirley MacLaine."

A Legendary Career Spanning Decades

MacLaine's extraordinary career began with Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 black comedy The Trouble With Harry. She quickly became a sought-after actress, appearing in notable projects throughout the late 1950s including Around The World in 80 Days and Ask Any Girl.

Her breakthrough role came in 1960 when she starred alongside Jack Lemmon in the romantic comedy The Apartment. The film proved to be both a critical and commercial success, earning ten Academy Award nominations and winning five, including Best Picture.

The actress continued to build on her success with memorable performances in The Children's Hour (1961), Sweet Charity (1969) and The Turning Point (1977). Her role in the 1983 film Terms Of Endearment earned her an Oscar for Best Actress, with the movie receiving eleven nominations at the 56th Academy Awards.

MacLaine later joined an ensemble cast including Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias (1989). More recent projects include Bewitched (2005), Bernie (2011) and The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (2013).

The versatile actress has also made successful transitions to television, appearing in popular shows such as Downton Abbey, Glee and Only Murders In The Building, where she starred alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.

Reflecting on her enduring career in a 2020 interview with Variety, MacLaine shared: "Even though I tell people the truth, I'm not a diva. That comes from my 3-year-old ballet training. I've got to go all the way back to that and just hard, honest work, with quite a bit of art, if you can muster it, thrown in."

She revealed that she maintained her career partly to fund her passion for travel, explaining: "I've also stayed in the business and never thought about quitting because I wanted to pay for plane tickets to travel. I didn't socialize Hollywood style. I'd rather travel to a country I hadn't been to. So when I think about my life, I'm not sure I wouldn't put the travels a bit above show business."
