Zach Braff has officially signed on to reprise his role as John 'J.D.' Dorian in the upcoming Scrubs reboot, sources confirmed to Deadline. The deal marks a major step forward for the series, which is set to air on ABC and will be produced by 20th Television.
Braff's return was not without hurdles. The actor reportedly insisted on filming in Los Angeles rather than Vancouver, Canada, a cost-cutting measure proposed by producers. Financial disagreements also created an impasse that threatened the project. However, a compromise was eventually reached, though it remains unclear if the production will remain in LA.
With Braff on board, securing other original cast members—including Donald Faison (Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Judy Reyes (Carla), and John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox)—is expected to be easier. The reboot also has creator Bill Lawrence attached, though his exclusive deal with Warner Bros. TV initially complicated negotiations.
Lawrence, who is currently showrunning Apple TV+ series such as Shrinking and Ted Lasso, will not write or run the reboot due to his commitments. The original series aired on NBC for eight seasons before moving to ABC for its ninth and final season.
