Ronan Keating Transforms BBC Series Into Personal Tribute After Brother's Death
The One Show presenter Ronan Keating has candidly disclosed how his new BBC travel series, originally conceived as a scenic exploration, dramatically evolved into an emotional and deeply personal journey. The programme, titled Wild Atlantic, follows Keating as he traverses the stunning western coastline of Ireland, but it became far more than a mere travelogue.
A Labour of Love Born from Grief
Keating described the production as "a labour of love," explaining that the project fundamentally changed as he began to openly discuss the profound loss of his brother, Ciaran Keating. Ciaran tragically died in a car accident in 2023, a devastating event that deeply affected the singer and television personality.
"It evolved more into a journey to discover why my brother, who passed away two years ago in a terrible car accident, chose the west coast of Ireland," Keating revealed. "What was his love for the west coast of Ireland?" This central question became the heart of the series, shifting its focus from picturesque landscapes to a poignant exploration of memory and connection.
An Unplanned and Natural Emotional Unfolding
Reflecting on the process of discussing his brother's death on camera, Keating admitted he had "struggled a lot" with the loss. "And to be honest, I still don't think I've unboxed a lot of it," he confessed. "But it was a very natural thing [to speak about]. I was just talking while making the show and it just came out, and while we were out on the road, we adapted, and we changed the plan."
This adaptation involved a significant and heartfelt decision. Keating invited his brother's elder children to join him on the journey, creating a space for shared remembrance and healing. "To come on the journey with me and speak about my brother, to almost help them to understand and help them deal with the loss of their dad," he explained, highlighting the series' therapeutic dimension for the wider family.
A Deeper Understanding and a Tight Bond
When questioned if filming brought him closer to his late brother, the Boyzone star responded emphatically: "Absolutely! It helped me understand why he loved it so much and why he chose it, why he left Dublin." He elaborated on their exceptionally close relationship, noting that even during his busy career with Boyzone, they remained deeply connected through shared involvement in the music industry.
Keating recalled a pivotal moment for his brother: "It was like a light bulb moment for him. He just said, 'I've had enough, and I want to get out and get away from it all.' And chose the west coast. He brought his family up there. I found it hard at the beginning when he made the decision. But this film, and this time I spent in there, it was incredibly helpful."
The Tragic Accident Behind the Story
The series is underpinned by a profound personal tragedy. Ciaran Keating and his wife Annemarie were travelling to watch their son play football in July 2023 when their car was involved in a collision with another vehicle in County Mayo. Ciaran lost his life, while Annemarie sustained serious injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, 22-year-old Dean Harte from Tyrellspass, County Westmeath, pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death. He received a 17-month suspended sentence for his role in the incident.
Wild Atlantic is a new series commissioned for BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Daytime, marking a significant and emotionally charged departure from conventional travel programming, shaped entirely by one man's journey through grief and remembrance.
