Mason Greenwood is planning a move away from Marseille this summer, and Manchester United will profit from the transfer due to a 40% sell-on clause included in his 2024 departure. However, Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they are not pursuing the 24-year-old attacker, ending speculation of a Premier League return.
Greenwood's Marseille record and transfer rumours
Greenwood has scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances for Marseille, making him one of the most sought-after forwards in the summer transfer window. Reports had linked Spurs with a move to bring him back to England, but Football London has confirmed there is no interest from the north London club.
Roberto De Zerbi, now Tottenham's manager, previously praised Greenwood during their time together at Marseille. De Zerbi described Greenwood as a "good guy" who had paid a "heavy price" after attempted rape and assault charges against him were dropped in 2023. The comments sparked fan backlash, and De Zerbi later apologised after joining Spurs.
De Zerbi's apology and Tottenham's stance
De Zerbi said at the time: "I don't want to get involved in anyone's private life. All I can see is that Mason seems a good lad; he paid in a strong way for what happened." He added that Greenwood had found the right environment in France. After the backlash, De Zerbi apologised, stating: "I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly. I apologise to those who I offended with this subject matter."
Despite De Zerbi's previous praise, Tottenham have ruled out a move for Greenwood, focusing on other targets.
Marseille's asking price and Roma's interest
Marseille are keen to sell Greenwood before the end of June and will consider all offers, according to L'Equipe. Roma have expressed interest, with an initial proposal of around £35 million (€40 million). However, Marseille are holding out for at least £47 million (€55 million). Corriere dello Sport reports that Roma may return with a secondary offer of approximately £40 million (€45 million) plus £4.3 million (€5 million) in add-ons.
If a deal goes through at around £43.3 million, Manchester United would receive roughly £17 million from the 40% sell-on clause. This cash injection would boost manager Michael Carrick's transfer budget as United prepare for the 2026-27 season, with Ederson already linked to the club.
