Alan Shearer has suggested that Sandro Tonali could be tempted to leave Newcastle United for Tottenham Hotspur due to the appeal of living in London and working under manager Roberto De Zerbi. The former Newcastle striker made the comments after Tottenham had a reported £80 million bid rejected for the Italian midfielder, with Newcastle holding out for a valuation of £100 million.
Shearer's Surprise at Tonali's Potential Move
Speaking to BetFair, Shearer admitted he was surprised that Tonali would consider a move to Tottenham, given the club's recent form. Spurs narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League last season, finishing in 17th place. Shearer said: "Tottenham just avoided relegation. I get the attraction of London but going to Spurs who have finished so low over the last two years would be a surprise career move for Tonali in my eyes."
However, he acknowledged the pull factors: "I know Spurs have a new manager and that may be a pull for him, London, obviously. But in terms of the football club, look where they have finished the last two years."
Newcastle's Strong Negotiating Position
Newcastle United are in a strong position to retain Tonali, who is under contract at St. James' Park until 2030. There is no buyout clause in his deal, meaning the club can accept or reject any offer as they see fit. The Magpies have already demonstrated their resolve in the transfer market, as seen in the protracted saga surrounding Alexander Isak's potential move to Liverpool.
Shearer added: "If he doesn't want to be there, you put the price you want and if someone wants to pay it. It looks as if it'll have to be three figures, then you say thank you very much, get the £100 million plus and you move on."
Interest from Multiple Clubs
Tonali has been linked with several clubs this summer, including Manchester United and Arsenal. However, Tottenham are now considered one of the favourites after making a formal bid. The north London club are serious about signing the 26-year-old, but their offer of £80 million falls short of Newcastle's £100 million asking price.
The transfer saga is expected to continue as the summer window progresses, with Newcastle determined to keep their star midfielder unless their valuation is met.
