Our Farm Next Door Finale Moves Viewers with Heartbreaking Farewell to Beloved Dog
The Monday night finale of the popular Channel 4 series Our Farm Next Door left audiences across the nation in tears, as the Owen family said an emotional goodbye to their cherished pet dog, Chalky. In deeply moving scenes, mum Amanda Owen, aged 51, along with her children, provided the elderly Jack Russell with a gentle and loving send-off during her final days.
A Comforting Final Chapter for a Faithful Companion
Amanda and her family dedicated themselves to ensuring Chalky's comfort, showering her with tender loving care, frequent cuddles, and hand-feeding her favourite treats. "She's pretty much gorged herself on sausages and wafer-thin ham," Amanda shared. "Hopefully, she'll fall asleep in her bed and not wake up." The mother-of-nine reflected on the emotional weight of the past few weeks, noting Chalky's significant decline. "These last few weeks have been quite emotional because Chalky is fading away. She's slowed down hugely. I think, on the quiet, that her time is nigh. She's nearly at an end," she said, adding, "She's not in any pain, but she's soon going to be going to the kennel in the sky."
Describing Chalky as a "real character," Amanda admitted, "To see her going downhill has been quite hard." When the moment finally arrived later in the episode, the family faced an intensely difficult experience. "It was really clear and obvious that Chalky was fading away," Amanda recounted. "When the children came running out the house door saying that Chalky had passed away, they were absolutely bereft. They knew it was coming and I knew it was coming but still, just to see her laid there as peaceful as anything and still warm, it pulled at your heartstrings."
Remembering a Mischievous and Beloved Family Member
Chalky, who lived to the impressive age of 14, was remembered fondly for her spirited and untrained nature. "She had a good life. I think it was fair to say there was not one bit of her that was trained in any way and she didn't like having her hair brushed. She liked cheese...You don't get over a dog like that but when you think of her you smile, rather than that initial sorrow," Amanda reflected.
In a lighter anecdote, Amanda revealed Chalky's mischievous side, recalling an incident where the dog ran away and stowed away in a burger van. "She went to a party, and I got a phone call from someone who said she was in the company of a Labrador in a hot tub," she admitted with a smile.
The farewell was marked by poignant tributes, including the youngest of the Owens' nine children reading a beautiful poem for Chalky. She was laid to rest in a flower-decorated box on the family farm, with dad Clive digging her final resting spot near their home.
