HBO has announced the cast for its upcoming television adaptation of the Harry Potter series, set to premiere globally on HBO Max on 25 December 2026. The series aims to be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's books, with each season covering one of the seven novels.
After auditioning over 30,000 actors, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The trio takes over roles originated by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in the films.
John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, replacing the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. Janet McTeer will play Professor Minerva McGonagall, previously portrayed by the late Maggie Smith. Paapa Essiedu takes on the role of Severus Snape, originally played by Alan Rickman.
Other cast members include Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves the Poltergeist, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will play Petunia and Vernon Dursley, respectively. Bertie Carvel will be Cornelius Fudge, and Katherine Parkinson will portray Molly Weasley.
The series is expected to run for a decade, with characters matching their ages in the books. Daniel Radcliffe has expressed excitement to watch as an audience member.
