The countdown to the end of Netflix's beloved coming-of-age comedy Never Have I Ever has begun, and star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has some very specific ideas about how she'd like to see the series conclude.
In an exclusive interview, the 21-year-old Canadian actress revealed her dream casting choice for a final season cameo that would bring her character Devi Vishwakumar's journey full circle.
The Ultimate Fantasy Cameo
"I've said it before and I'll say it again - I want M. Night Shyamalan," Ramakrishnan declared with enthusiasm. "That would be iconic for so many reasons."
The acclaimed director, known for films like The Sixth Sense and Signs, shares the same Tamil heritage as Ramakrishnan's character, making the potential cameo particularly meaningful.
"Having him appear would be such a powerful nod to our community," she explained. "It would show young Tamil kids that someone who looks like them can achieve incredible success in Hollywood."
Bittersweet Goodbyes
As production wraps on the fourth and final season, Ramakrishnan admits to mixed emotions about saying farewell to the character that launched her career.
"It's definitely bittersweet," she shared. "Devi has been such a huge part of my life for these past few years. I've grown up alongside her in so many ways."
The actress, who was virtually unknown when she landed the role through an open casting call, reflects on how the experience has transformed her life.
From Unknown to Netflix Star
"This show has been everything to me," Ramakrishnan said emotionally. "I went from being a complete unknown to having this incredible platform to tell stories that matter."
She particularly values the opportunity Never Have I Ever has provided to represent South Asian characters in mainstream television.
"We've shown that stories about brown girls can be universal. Our experiences with love, loss, family, and friendship resonate with everyone, regardless of background."
What's Next for the Rising Star?
While Ramakrishnan remains tight-lipped about specific plot details for the final season, she promises fans won't be disappointed.
"The writers have created something really special for these last episodes," she teased. "It feels like the perfect conclusion to Devi's story."
As for her own future, the young actress is excited about the opportunities ahead while remaining grateful for the foundation Never Have I Ever has provided.
"This show will always be my first love," she said. "It taught me everything about this industry and gave me the confidence to pursue other projects."
The final season of Never Have I Ever is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2024.
