Netflix's Scooby-Doo Reboot Casts Horror Star McKenna Grace as Daphne

Netflix's highly anticipated live-action reboot of the iconic Scooby-Doo franchise has reportedly secured its first lead star. According to industry reports, actress McKenna Grace has been cast in the pivotal role of Daphne Blake, the resourceful redhead member of the beloved mystery-solving team.

Confirmed Casting and Series Details

Deadline has confirmed that Grace will portray Daphne in the streamer's upcoming eight-episode drama series from Berlanti Productions. The project, which remains untitled, is being developed by Midnight Radio, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television as a fresh reboot of the classic animated series that first debuted in 1969.

The series will serve as a brand new origin story for the Mystery Inc gang, exploring their formative summer at camp and the haunted case that initially brought them together. A synopsis reveals that old friends Shaggy and Daphne become embroiled in a supernatural murder mystery involving a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed the crime.

Together with pragmatic townie Velma and the enigmatic new kid Freddy, they investigate the creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all their secrets. This marks the first live-action television adaptation to reimagine the gang's earliest adventures and their first encounter with their cowardly canine companion Scooby-Doo.

McKenna Grace's Horror Credentials

Actress McKenna Grace brings substantial horror experience to the role of 'Danger Prone' Daphne, having recently appeared in the hit slasher sequel Five Nights at Freddy's 2. She also holds a significant role as Phoebe Spengler in the revamped Ghostbusters franchise and previously starred as Theodora Crain in the acclaimed supernatural drama The Haunting of Hill House.

Grace will further demonstrate her horror pedigree in the forthcoming Scream 7, which will witness the return of Matthew Lillard to the franchise. Interestingly, Lillard is a fellow Scooby-Doo alumnus who has portrayed Shaggy in live-action films and voiced the character in numerous animated projects.

Beyond her horror work, Grace is recognized for roles in The Handmaid's Tale and Regretting You, and will be portraying Maysilee Donner in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, arriving in cinemas this November.

Production Team and Previous Adaptations

The series is being penned by Josh Appelbaum, known for Heads of State, and Scott Rosenberg, writer of Jumanji. Their adaptation will be based on the mystery-solving teens and their talking dog originally created by Hanna-Barbera.

Daphne Blake was previously portrayed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar in two live-action Scooby-Doo films that also featured Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Freddie Prinze Jr as Fred, and Linda Cardellini as Velma. These films brought the animated characters to life for a new generation while maintaining the franchise's signature blend of comedy and spooky mystery.

Netflix's untitled Scooby-Doo series does not yet have an official release date, but development has been underway since last spring. The streaming giant continues to expand its portfolio of nostalgic reboots with this fresh take on one of animation's most enduring mystery franchises.
