French Film Star Nadia Farès Dies at 57 Following Swimming Pool Tragedy in Paris
The French entertainment world is in mourning following the tragic death of acclaimed actress Nadia Farès at the age of 57. The Morocco-born star passed away on Friday, 17 April 2026, exactly one week after being discovered unconscious in the swimming pool of a private gym in Paris's 9th arrondissement.
Farès had remained in a coma since the incident occurred on 11 April, with medical teams unable to revive her despite intensive care. Her family confirmed the devastating news through a statement to AFP, expressing their profound grief at losing both a national treasure and a beloved mother.
Heartbreaking Tributes from Her Daughters
Farès's two daughters shared emotional statements on social media following their mother's passing. "It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Nadia Farès this Friday," their official statement read. "France has lost a great artist, but for us, it is above all a mother we have just lost."
The sisters specifically requested "respect and discretion" during this difficult period of mourning, asking for privacy as they process their devastating loss.
Her daughter Cylia Chasman, an influencer and the child Farès shared with American film producer Steve Chasman, posted a particularly poignant tribute on Instagram, describing her mother as her "best friend" and "role model."
"Mama. This is a heartbreak I will never get over," Chasman wrote. "Everyday I wake up and pray this is a nightmare and that you're still with us. I know you fought your very hardest for your babies."
She revealed a particularly poignant conversation they had shared just days before the tragedy: "On Saturday we were on the phone and you told me you weren't afraid of death, and my response was that I was afraid of your death, and the next day the universe decided it was time for you."
Farès's other daughter, Shana, shared a brief message on her Instagram story, writing: "I love you maman, I'll write my words when I'm ready. Please give me time."
A Distinguished Career in Film and Television
Nadia Farès rose to international prominence in 2000 with her breakthrough role in Mathieu Kassovitz's thriller Les Rivières pourpres (The Crimson Rivers), based on Jean-Christophe Grangé's novel. She starred alongside French cinema legends Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel in what became a defining performance.
Her career continued to flourish with roles in major productions including the 2007 American action thriller War alongside Jason Statham and Jet Li, and the horror film Storm Warning. On television, she gained recognition for her portrayal of Vanessa d'Abrantes opposite Gérard Depardieu in Netflix's first original French-language series, Marseille, appearing across both seasons from 2016 to 2018.
Tragically, Farès had been preparing to embark on a new creative chapter, scheduled to begin shooting her first feature film as both screenwriter and director in September 2026. The project, described as an action-comedy, represented a significant milestone in her evolving career behind the camera.
Health Challenges and Resilience
Throughout her life, Farès had been remarkably open about the significant health challenges she faced. She revealed in interviews that she underwent brain surgery in 2007 to address what she described as a "far from small" aneurysm. Additionally, she endured three separate heart operations within a four-year period, demonstrating remarkable resilience throughout these medical ordeals.
Her passing has sent shockwaves through the French entertainment industry and among her international fans, who remember her not only for her considerable talent but for her courage in facing personal health battles with transparency and strength.
