McLeod's Daughters star Rachael Carpani dies aged 45

The entertainment world is in mourning following the announcement that Australian actor Rachael Carpani has died at the age of 45. Her family confirmed she passed away "unexpectedly but peacefully" in the early hours of Sunday, 7th December, following a protracted battle with a chronic illness.

A Career Defined by Beloved Roles

Rachael Carpani was best known for her portrayal of Jodi Fountain on the iconic Australian television drama McLeod's Daughters. She joined the cast in 2001, with her performance earning her two Logie award nominations, including a Gold Logie nod in 2007. The role cemented her status as a fan favourite.

After establishing herself, Carpani sought new challenges, relocating to Hollywood. There, she built a career with appearances in series like NCIS: Los Angeles and The Glades, eventually landing the lead role in the family drama Against the Wall. She also featured in the 2020 Ben Affleck film Finding the Way Back.

In a poignant full-circle moment, she returned to Australian screens in 2024 with a recurring role on Home and Away, playing the mysterious Claudia Salini. She described the experience as "one of the most enjoyable times I've ever had on set." Tragically, it would prove to be her final acting part.

Private Struggle and Public Advocacy

Behind the scenes, Carpani waged a long and private war against chronic pain. She was a vocal advocate for endometriosis awareness, having been diagnosed with the debilitating condition, along with adenomyosis, in her mid-30s after suffering since the age of 13.

In candid social media posts, she detailed the immense physical toll, describing how attending social events often felt like "climbing Mt Everest" while masking severe pain. She was critical of systemic failures in women's healthcare, stating Australia was "woefully, woefully behind."

Carpani also used her platform to speak out on other issues close to her heart, including domestic violence, the #MeToo movement, Indigenous rights, and the conflict in Gaza.

An Outpouring of Grief and Tribute

News of her passing prompted an immediate wave of tributes from colleagues and friends. Bridie Carter, her McLeod's Daughters co-star, posted an emotional homage on Instagram, calling Carpani the "baby of the MD family" and stating, "This is the wrong order of things. We are better people for having the privilege of sharing time with you."

Matt Passmore, who worked with her on both McLeod's Daughters and Against the Wall, wrote: "Farewell my friend... The greatest gift you gave was knowing you."

Her family has requested privacy during this difficult time. A private funeral was held on 19th December, with the family indicating they would be making no further public statements.
