MasterChef judge and renowned chef John Torode has been left furious after BBC executives unexpectedly pulled the plug on his travel and food series, John Torode’s Australia, without any prior discussion.
The 58-year-old TV personality, who won the 2020 series of Celebrity MasterChef, claims he was given no explanation for the abrupt cancellation and felt 'hung out to dry' by the broadcaster.
No Warning, No Explanation
Torode revealed that he only discovered his show had been axed when a friend spotted it missing from the BBC’s upcoming schedule. 'I had no idea,' he admitted. 'Nobody told me anything.'
The series, which followed Torode as he explored Australia’s culinary scene, was reportedly shelved despite strong viewer ratings and critical acclaim.
A Slap in the Face
Insiders suggest the decision was part of wider BBC budget cuts, but Torode feels disrespected by the lack of communication. 'You’d think after 20 years with the BBC, I’d at least get a phone call,' he said.
The chef, who also fronts MasterChef: The Professionals, remains under contract with the BBC but is said to be considering his options following the snub.
Fans React
Viewers have taken to social media to express their disappointment, with many calling the cancellation 'a huge mistake'. One fan wrote: 'This was the best food travel show on TV. What is the BBC thinking?'
While the BBC has declined to comment on the specifics, a spokesperson stated that 'scheduling decisions are always difficult' and that they 'value John’s continued contribution to our programming.'
