The Masked Singer UK fans fume over slow start to new series
Masked Singer fans complain as new series kicks off

Fans of ITV's popular guessing game The Masked Singer have voiced a collective groan, expressing frustration just minutes into the show's highly anticipated return. The series launched its seventh season on Saturday, 3rd January 2026, but a revamped opening left many viewers impatient.

A New Format Meets Immediate Backlash

The new series began with host Joel Dommett announcing a first in the show's history: the initial two episodes would be led by The Masked Singer Band. The first performer, Goldfish, took to the stage with their band 'No Trout', with Emperor Penguin and the Antarctic Funkeys scheduled to follow on Sunday, 4th January.

Panellist Mo Gilligan also treated the audience to an impromptu song. However, this extended introductory segment meant a significant delay before the first masked character was properly introduced, testing the patience of the audience at home.

Viewers Vent on Social Media

Within moments, disgruntled fans flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their irritation. The consensus was clear: the show was taking too long to get to the main event.

One exasperated viewer demanded: "For god's sake, get on with it!" Another echoed the sentiment, criticising the style: "FFS - this is terrible, American-esque s****, just get on with the show."

Commenting on the pre-show content, a third person noted: "10 minutes of guff before it even starts." Meanwhile, Mo Gilligan's musical moment was labelled "so cringe" by another unimpressed fan.

What Else is New This Season?

Despite the rocky start, the new season promises more unmaskings than ever before. The familiar detective panel of Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan, and Maya Jama all returned, ready to puzzle out the celebrities hidden beneath the elaborate costumes.

The show remains a prime-time staple for ITV, but this immediate viewer feedback highlights the delicate balance producers must strike when refreshing a well-loved format. Whether the 'Band' theme will pay off in coming episodes remains to be seen.
