Plot Developments and Future of the Series
Season two picks up the narrative directly after the dramatic events of the first season. Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) has been promoted to president of M-Tex after his rescue from the cartel leader Jimenez, played by Alex Meraz. However, peace seems elusive.
The storyline delves deeper into the proposed alliance between Jimenez's superior, Gallino (Andy Garcia), and the oil companies, strongly hinting that Tommy's complicated relationship with the cartel is far from over. Furthermore, the death of Tommy's mentor, Monty (Jon Hamm), has left him with the heavy responsibility of managing the estate, adding another layer of pressure.
While season two is now underway, there are already strong indications that the story may continue. It has been reported that co-creator Taylor Sheridan is preparing to start writing a third season. Adding weight to these rumours, Billy Bob Thornton himself revealed to USA Today that he has signed a contract for "four or five years", strongly suggesting a long-term plan for the series.
When questioned by The Hollywood Reporter about the potential for another season, co-creator Christian Wallace expressed optimism, stating, "Of course I am. I'm really looking forward to it." He was quick to clarify, however, that "there's no official green light yet for season three. It's just me with fingers crossed."
