Kris Marshall, the actor famed for his roles in Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise, has spoken candidly about the extraordinary journey of the period drama Sanditon, a series that was axed by ITV only to be dramatically resurrected thanks to a fervent fan campaign.
The Unprecedented Cancellation and Comeback
Based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel, Sanditon initially struggled to find its audience and was dropped after its first season. However, in a remarkable turn of events, the show returned for a second series in July 2022. Reflecting on this unique situation in an interview with RadioTimes, Marshall revealed, "It is the first show I've been on that has been cancelled and then reinstated."
He was quick to credit the show's passionate supporters for its revival, noting its surge in popularity across the Atlantic was a key factor. "The fans did that after it took off in America, organising an incredible campaign to bring the show back," Marshall stated. He recalled the "relentless" efforts of fans, who created impressive sand art displays near the show's filming location to show their support.
Tom Parker's Enduring Vision
Marshall plays the driven businessman Tom Parker, whose grand ambition is to transform the sleepy seaside village of Sanditon into a resort to rival Brighton. His plans were left in tatters by a devastating fire in the first season, but the character's determination never wavered. Marshall expressed his delight that Sanditon was ultimately commissioned for two more series, allowing him to continue portraying Parker's relentless pursuit of his vision.
A Festive Return to Shipton Abbott
Meanwhile, fans can currently see Kris Marshall back in his beloved role as the endearingly clumsy DI Humphrey Goodman in the Beyond Paradise Christmas special. The festive episode, airing on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One, promises a classic Shipton Abbott mystery.
The plot involves a man with no memory found on the police station steps, clutching a photograph of Humphrey. As the team works to uncover his identity, they must also handle a flurry of holiday cases. Meanwhile, Martha races to execute a secret plan with the help of Anne, Zoe, and a special guest, while Kelby attempts to aid a man trapped inside a snowman costume.
With unexpected visitors, seasonal crimes, and a heartwarming reunion on the cards, the team faces a chaotic Christmas that could end with a life-changing revelation.
