A festive segment on BBC Breakfast took an amusingly awkward turn on Friday morning when Helen Skelton dramatically walked off the set of Morning Live, leaving her co-host Gethin Jones standing alone.
The Sprout Discussion That Sparked Confusion
The incident occurred during the regular crossover between the two BBC One programmes on December 19. Skelton and Jones were previewing the day's content on Morning Live for Breakfast viewers, with a focus on transforming the much-debated Christmas dinner staple: Brussels sprouts.
"It wouldn't be Christmas without sprouts," Helen remarked, promising to change the minds of the vegetable's "millions of haters" with a recipe involving "secret herbs and spices." From the BBC Breakfast sofa, presenter Naga Munchetty then asked the pair if they were in the "sprouts camp," before revealing she had tried her first raw sprout that very day, describing it as "really nice."
The 'Raw' Versus 'Roar' Misunderstanding
It was Munchetty's use of the word 'raw' that led to the on-air mix-up. Gethin Jones, seemingly mishearing, responded with "Your sprout what?" prompting Helen Skelton to step in and clarify.
Skelton humorously demonstrated the difference between eating something 'raw' and letting out a 'roar.' Upon grasping the misunderstanding, Jones let out a small, playful roar, which left Skelton looking bemused.
The Playful Exit That Left Everyone in Stitches
In a moment of pure comedic timing, Helen Skelton then decided her work was done. With a sudden "Bye!", she theatrically exited the frame, marching off-screen and abandoning Gethin Jones, who was left looking bewildered and standing solo.
The unexpected departure had Naga Munchetty and her BBC Breakfast co-presenter Charlie Stayt in fits of laughter. "Gethin is still there!" Naga observed, with Charlie adding, "I think he is just standing there for a while longer."
The light-hearted moment provided early morning viewers with a dose of festive humour, showcasing the playful dynamic between the two Morning Live hosts. BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One, with Morning Live following at 9.30am.
