Fans of the beloved ITV period crime drama Grantchester have received a major update on the show's future, with stars seemingly confirming a release window for an eleventh season.
Stars Hint at 2027 Return
Actors Kacey Ainsworth, 57, and Rishi Nair, 34, appeared on James Martin's Saturday Morning to discuss the upcoming tenth series. During the chat, host James Martin, 53, teased that the popular show would continue beyond the current run.
"I can't give the game away," Martin began, "But it's so popular that you're going to do another series as well beyond what you've already done." When asked about the timeline, Ainsworth appeared to reveal the plan, stating: "Don't worry, 2027 or something like that."
Her co-star Rishi Nair quickly agreed, adding: "Yeah, I think that's when we've got up to." This confirmation means viewers can look forward to more mysteries in the Cambridgeshire village once series ten concludes later this year.
Behind the Scenes of the Hit Drama
The interview also offered insights into the show's enduring appeal and the dynamics between its characters. Nair, who plays vicar Alphy Kotteram, joked about his character's central role in solving crimes.
"If you watch carefully, you'll realise that the police officer actually solves nothing; it's the vicar who does all the work," he quipped. "We joke the vicar should be on the payroll for the station. And actually, he's spending way too much time at the police station and not enough time at the church!"
More Than Just a Murder Mystery
Kacey Ainsworth, who has played Cathy Keating since the series began, reflected on what initially attracted her to the project and why it continues to resonate. She praised creator Daisy Coulam's vision.
"I read the scripts and I thought they were amazing and brilliant," Ainsworth said. "It's not just about a murder mystery. The whole series is about faith - not just religious faith - but faith in humanity; it's about faith in community; it's about faith in justice... all of those things."
She emphasised the show's focus on ordinary people, concluding: "This isn't Downton Abbey; they're not lords and ladies. These are regular folk and how they lived and worked."
Grantchester season 10 is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 7 at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX. James Martin’s Saturday Morning airs every Saturday at 9:30am on the same channels.
