GoldenEye Leaves Amazon Prime: Pierce Brosnan's Bond Debut Expires Soon
GoldenEye: Pierce Brosnan's Bond film leaves Amazon Prime

James Bond fans are on a deadline, as one of the most celebrated films in the franchise, GoldenEye, is scheduled for removal from Amazon Prime Video imminently.

A Licence to Stream is Expiring

The film that introduced Pierce Brosnan as the iconic secret agent will vanish from the streaming library at the end of November. This gives subscribers only a matter of weeks to watch or re-watch this fan-favourite chapter.

Released in 1995, GoldenEye ended a six-year big-screen hiatus for 007 and was notably the first film in the series not to be directly based on any work by the franchise's creator, Ian Fleming.

The Mission: Stop a Rogue Agent

In this seventeenth instalment, James Bond faces off against a formidable former ally. Alec Trevelyan, a rogue ex-MI6 agent brilliantly portrayed by Sean Bean, has faked his own death.

His sinister plan involves using a terrifying satellite weapon, codenamed GoldenEye, which has the power to unleash an electromagnetic pulse, disabling all electronic devices across London. Bond is thrust into a race against time to thwart this catastrophic threat.

He is not alone in his mission. Bond teams up with Natalya Simonova, a talented computer programmer who helped design the weapon and becomes a crucial ally.

A Cast of Icons and Critical Acclaim

GoldenEye also marked the debut of Judi Dench as M, bringing a new, stern authority to the role of Bond's superior. The film's memorable villains included Famke Janssen as the lethal Xenia Onatopp.

The movie's powerful theme song, 'GoldenEye', was written by U2's Bono and the Edge and performed by the legendary Tina Turner.

The film was a resounding success, both commercially and critically. It grossed an impressive $26 million in its North American opening weekend and set a new record in the UK with a $5.5 million haul. It continues to be highly rated, holding an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans online echo this praise. One viewer declared it "by far Pierce Brosnan's best Bond film" and "one of the best of the entire franchise". Another praised the well-elaborated story and Brosnan's unique and charming portrayal of 007. A third highlighted the film's technical merits, noting its "well-executed stunts" and "punchy action".

Your Final Chance to Stream

GoldenEye will remain available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video until the end of November. Once it departs, viewers wishing to see Brosnan's first outing as the famous spy will need to turn to alternative platforms, with Apple TV confirmed as one option.
