Ghosts Comedy Set for Cinematic Return with Original Cast

Fans of the hit BBC comedy Ghosts have reason to celebrate as the beloved series is returning in a new feature film format. The announcement comes two years after the show concluded with a highly successful Christmas special that captivated millions of viewers.

Original Cast Reunites for New Adventure

The film, titled Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, will bring back most of the original ensemble cast. This includes Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond, who also serve as writers for the project. They will be joined by Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie, and Kiell Smith-Bynoe, ensuring that the familiar spirit of the show remains intact.

The creators initially believed the series had reached its natural conclusion when Alison and Mike, the married couple at the heart of the story, sold their inherited haunted house and moved away with their newborn child. However, a compelling new story idea sparked their enthusiasm for one final adventure.

Creators Express Excitement for New Chapter

"We thought we had said goodbye to Button House at the end of the final series," the writing team explained. "We never planned to come back. But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn't resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure."

They added: "We can't wait to be together and to welcome some brilliant new faces, to tell this soul-stirring tale of life and death."

Production Details and Industry Support

Producers Alison Owen and Debra Hayward expressed their delight at bringing the popular comedy to cinema screens for the first time. Director Alison Carpenter promised that both "die-hard fans and newcomers are in for a real treat" with this cinematic adaptation.

Eva Yates, Director of BBC Film, commented: "At BBC, we are overjoyed to be bringing our beloved 'Ghosts' back once again, this time for a hilarious and cinematic adventure, for the enjoyment of audiences on big and small screen alike."

The film will be shot at West Horsley Place in Surrey, along with various nearby locations, maintaining the visual continuity that fans have come to appreciate.

Legacy and International Success

Produced by Monumental Television, Ghosts enjoyed a successful five-series run on BBC1, concluding in 2023 with a Christmas special that attracted 7.2 million viewers. The show's format has also found international success, particularly in the United States where it is currently in its fifth season, demonstrating the universal appeal of its unique comedic premise.

This cinematic return represents a significant expansion of the Ghosts universe, offering both longtime fans and new audiences an opportunity to experience the haunted humor of Button House in a fresh, feature-length format.
