Married At First Sight Fans Sobbing Over Emotional Tribute to Late Mel Schilling
Fans of Married At First Sight were left in tears as the show aired an emotional tribute to the late relationship guru Mel Schilling during its season finale. The reunion episode, which aired on Monday night, delivered the expected drama but also included a heart-wrenching segment that left many viewers with lumps in their throats.
A Poignant Montage Sparks Outpouring of Grief
As season 13 drew to a close, the latest batch of brides and grooms opened up about their relationships, but it was the closing tribute that truly resonated with audiences. The segment featured a montage of memories dedicated to Australian expert Mel Schilling, who passed away last month after a battle with cancer. Devastated viewers took to social media to share their emotions, with many expressing how moved they were by the beautiful tribute.
One fan wrote, "I'm in tears, what a beautiful tribute. You will be so missed, Mel!" Another emotional viewer penned, "It’s been so surreal and sad watching the past few weeks knowing that Mel sadly passed." A third added, "Missing her so much, her smile is enough to bring joy to the whole world. We hope you’re doing well up there beautiful Mel."
Mel Schilling's Brave Battle with Cancer
The TV star was just 54 years old when she died, days after revealing that her cancer had spread to her brain and her light was ‘dimming’. Mel Schilling, a psychologist-turned-dating expert, saw her world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 while living in London with her family.
In an emotional Instagram post in February 2024, she shared that she had a ‘tumour the size of a lemon' successfully removed and had been given the all-clear, but later revealed it had spread to her lungs. Over Christmas, she received the devastating news that it had spread to her brain.
Heartbreaking News from Her Husband
The heartbreaking news of her passing was confirmed by her husband, Gareth Brisbane, from Northern Ireland, with whom she shared a 10-year-old daughter, Madison. He wrote in a statement, "Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love."
He continued, "In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life. It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me."
Gareth praised Mel as "a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both" and highlighted her courage, saying, "through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming."
He concluded, "To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate." The family expressed gratitude for the global support received during this difficult time.
