Fears are reportedly mounting that the long-running soap Emmerdale could be pulled off air following Sky's acquisition of ITV, as budget cuts loom. Sources indicate that Coronation Street, the world's longest-running soap, is considered safe, but Emmerdale's future appears uncertain.
Cast and Crew Concerns
The cast and crew of Emmerdale are reportedly worried about the show's future after Sky's group executive Dana Strong took over. Staff have raised concerns that Strong may not deem it cost-effective to produce both Emmerdale and Coronation Street, and with the latter being an institution, Emmerdale could be the one to go.
A source told The Sun: "Why would they pay huge amounts for two soaps that pretty much do the same thing? Coronation Street is the world’s longest running soap and it’s an institution, so it will never go anywhere. It is also shown in various countries worldwide. But for those working on Emmerdale there are real fears that the show hasn’t got a long term future anymore."
Budget Pressures
Another source added: "There is a lot of talk across both soaps about the future of Emmerdale now that the Sky takeover has happened. They will be looking at budgets and Emmerdale is incredibly vulnerable." Sky had warned that jobs may be cut when it agreed to buy ITV for £1.6 billion earlier this month.
ITV Studios is not part of the deal and will remain a standalone business, meaning existing shows like Coronation Street and Emmerdale must become more profitable to survive without the support of ITV's wider network. However, CEO Dame Carolyn McCall has insisted that ITV Studios can succeed on its own, and a Sky spokeswoman stated there are no immediate plans for a shake-up.
Official Reassurances
The Sky spokeswoman said: "ITV fan favourites are here to stay. We’ve agreed a long-term content partnership with ITV Studios to ensure viewers continue to enjoy the shows they know and love, including Emmerdale and Coronation Street, for years to come. Both ITV and Sky have a long-standing history of investing in British programming, and that commitment will continue."
Despite these reassurances, the uncertainty surrounding Emmerdale's future continues to worry those involved with the show.
