TUI Agent Reveals Cruise Booking Mistake and Tips

A TUI travel agent with nearly four decades of experience has identified the most common mistake passengers make when booking a cruise holiday: focusing only on the price. Michelle Kirkham, a Retail Manager at TUI for 38 years, has helped thousands of Britons plan their holidays, including cruises on TUI's Marella Cruises. She warns that a cheaper deal is not always better if it does not align with what a traveller wants from their holiday.

The Price Trap and Choosing the Right Ship

According to Kirkham, the biggest error people make is choosing purely based on price. "A cheaper deal isn't always better if it doesn't match what you want from your holiday. The secret is picking the right ship and experience first," she explained. She emphasised that passengers spend most of their time onboard, so the ship itself shapes the holiday. Whether a traveller wants a relaxed, family-friendly, or adults-only atmosphere, that choice makes all the difference.

Cabin Selection and Included Amenities

Kirkham also highlighted the importance of cabin selection, especially for first-time cruisers. She recommended a balcony cabin if the budget allows, as it provides space, privacy, and sea views that elevate the experience. However, she cautioned Brits to pay attention to what is included in the fare to avoid unexpected costs. "Your accommodation, main meals, and entertainment are covered, but things like drinks packages, excursions, and WiFi can cost extra. Planning for that upfront makes everything stress-free," she said.

Booking Timing and Itinerary Advice

Cruise lines often open bookings up to two years in advance, and industry insiders suggest that booking 12 to 18 months ahead can secure the best value deals on dates and cabins. Conversely, last-minute bookings can offer tempting deals for those flexible with dates and itineraries. For first-time cruisers, Kirkham recommended a Mediterranean itinerary, such as Marella's Highlights of the Mediterranean. "It's got real bucket list appeal. You're seeing some of Europe's most famous destinations in one holiday, with minimal sea days, so there's always something to explore. It's a brilliant introduction to cruising," she said.

Dispelling Myths About Modern Cruising

Kirkham also addressed outdated perceptions of cruise holidays, noting that modern ships are like floating resorts with something for everyone. "First-time cruisers are often put off by outdated myths, when the reality is completely different. People still think cruises are formal, old-fashioned or just for older travellers, but modern ships are like floating resorts. There's something for everyone, whether you want relaxation, adventure or a lively atmosphere," she added.
