Coronation Street Villain Farrel Hagerty Departs Once More
Actress Farrel Hagerty has publicly confirmed her departure from the long-running ITV soap Coronation Street, revealing she has ceased filming for the programme. This marks the second exit for Hagerty, who portrays the character Lou Michaelis, a notorious soap villain introduced to viewers in February of last year.
A Short-Lived Return to the Cobbles
Speaking candidly on the Girlfriend Material podcast, Hagerty disclosed, 'I'm out of the show now. I've stopped filming. I came back in Corrie for, like, a short stint.' She elaborated that her return, which commenced in January 2026, lasted approximately six months, with her character's narrative arc concluding with imprisonment. 'She's in prison. She's not a good girl,' Hagerty stated, referencing Lou Michaelis's fate.
This confirmation follows initial reports in April last year indicating Hagerty's planned exit. Her departure is now synchronized with that of her on-screen husband, actor Joe Layton, who portrays Mick. News of Layton's exit was previously revealed by the Daily Mail, with both actors reportedly contracted for a specific period to drive a major summer storyline.
Contractual Roles and Fan Reaction
A spokesperson for Coronation Street provided context to The Sun, explaining, 'Mick and Lou were brought into the show to cause chaos on the cobbles in the build-up to a major storyline in the summer and they are already making their presence felt.' The spokesperson emphasized that the characters were always intended to be temporary, brought in to 'pass through and leave a trail of destruction behind them'.
Despite still filming scenes that will air until summer, both actors are scheduled to film their final segments next month. An insider source told The Sun, 'She will be leaving the soap alongside Joe - they were bought on as a couple and will leave as such. Fans were hoping they would be around for a while but there are no plans to keep them on longer than first intended.'
The characters' reception among the fanbase was notably mixed. While early comparisons were drawn between Lou and iconic cobbles figure Janice Battersby, many viewers expressed dissatisfaction. One fan vehemently criticized the duo online, stating, 'Absolutely dreadful characters. Written horribly, not evil yet absolutely no redeeming qualities.' Another added, 'Potentially up there as the worst new characters ever for me. A real sign of the s*** show that is Corrie in the 2020s.'
Behind the Scenes and Character Development
Lou Michaelis first entered the Weatherfield narrative by befriending established character Gemma Winter Brown, played by Dolly-Rose Campbell. In a historic move for the soap, Lou and Mick subsequently moved into a house on the opposite side of the ginnel, a location never before utilized in Coronation Street.
For actor Joe Layton, joining the cast was a professional milestone. He previously shared his enthusiasm, saying, 'Coronation Street is such an institute in British television and to get to walk down the cobbles in Mick's shoes is so exciting.' He also praised the collaborative environment and his co-star, noting, 'To also do it alongside Farrel is awesome - we are having great fun together and connecting really well whilst developing our characters.'
Layton expressed a particular affinity for portraying complex, villainous roles, explaining, 'I really enjoy playing what people would refer to as a baddie or a villain because for me the most interesting thing is all how we move past the first initial judgement of them... It's really interesting because when you're playing a character, a part of you has got to love them and empathize with them and understand them.'
An insider speaking to The Mirror hinted that Mick's character would remain on screen until late July, teasing 'lots more to come' before the final curtain. Further details regarding the precise circumstances of both characters' exits are anticipated to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Coronation Street continues to broadcast on ITV1 and is available for streaming on the ITVX platform.
