Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen Herriot in the beloved series All Creatures Great and Small, has spoken about the departure of her co-star Will Thorpe, who portrays Gerald. In an interview with PBS's Masterpiece, Shenton expressed her sadness at Gerald's exit, describing him as a 'favourite' part of the show.
Gerald and Mrs Hall, played by Anna Madeley, had developed a romantic relationship that Shenton admitted she enjoyed watching unfold. 'I really liked them. I really liked Gerald. I thought they had something good,' she said. However, Gerald's character leaves the village to care for his sister, a storyline that Shenton acknowledged as 'one of those things when life's sometimes a bit unfair.'
Shenton also praised Thorpe's comedic talents, calling him 'bloody hilarious' and 'brilliant at telling jokes.' She added, 'He'll be missed.' Fans of the show were similarly emotional, with many taking to social media to express their heartbreak over the separation.
The news comes as the cast prepares for season five, which has already wrapped filming. Confirmed returning characters include Tristan Farnon, played by Callum Woodhouse, who left in series three for military service. Nicholas Ralph reprises his role as James Herriot, Samuel West returns as Siegfried, and Anna Madeley is back as Mrs Hall.
