Coronation Street star Amy Robbins has expressed her excitement over acting legend Frances Barber joining the cast, describing her as 'just so perfect' for the long-running ITV programme. Barber, known for her work in Doctor Who, Cold Feet, and Benidorm, has filmed a guest stint as a relative of Bernie Winter-Alahan, played by Jane Hazlegrove.
Robbins 'Couldn't Believe It' When Barber Arrived
Speaking to Digital Spy, Robbins, who plays Christina Boyd, admitted it was 'an utter thrill' when Barber turned up on set. 'I couldn't believe it,' she said. 'She's playing a relative of Bernie's. I have to say she is just so perfect for Corrie – she's everything Corrie women should be! Glamorous, a bit tough round the edges, but soft in the centre – just wonderful.'
Robbins revealed that her character Christina interacts with Barber's character, though she wished they had more scenes together. 'We did a few scenes together, but I wished we'd done more. She was fabulous,' Robbins added.
Barber's Illustrious Career
Frances Barber is no stranger to television, having appeared in Doctor Who, Cold Feet, Casualty, and Friday Night Dinner. She joined the ITV sitcom Benidorm in 2016 as Daisy. Beyond TV, Barber has a hugely successful stage career, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company alongside Sir Ian McKellen. The Wolverhampton-born actress has received two Olivier Award nominations for her stage work and has appeared in films including Prick Up Your Ears and An Ideal Husband.
Christina's Suspicious Behaviour on the Cobbles
Meanwhile, Christina Boyd has been acting suspiciously lately, distracted by calls and messages. Earlier this week, she was seen getting out of a mystery person's car. In Wednesday's episode (July 8), a suspicious Glenda, played by Jodie Prenger, went through Christina's handbag and discovered credit card statements in Mary Taylor's name, played by Patti Clare.
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
