Recent weeks have sparked concern among Coronation Street fans after a string of high-profile cast departures, including Helen Worth (Gail Platt) and Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw), alongside rumours that the ITV soap could be axed. Reports have described the show as 'dying a death', with claims it might disappear from screens within years.
However, a soap insider has dismissed these fears, telling The Mirror that 'Corrie is in no way on the brink of collapse'. They confirmed that major storylines are planned for 2025 and beyond, including a dementia storyline for Debbie Webster running into 2026, new characters, returning faces, and a massive stunt. 'It really is a case of one door closes and another opens,' the insider said.
A Coronation Street spokesperson also addressed misleading ratings reports, noting that an episode aired on a Thursday at 9pm—outside the usual slot—was unfairly singled out. They highlighted that Monday's knife crime episode peaked at 3.9 million viewers, consolidating to the show's 2024 average of 4.4 million, making it the most-watched soap on TV.
Regarding the wave of exits, a source clarified that many departures were planned months or even a year ago, and are not part of a sudden mass exodus. 'Most of this is common knowledge with the cast already,' they said, urging fans not to expect constant further announcements.
