Call the Midwife Star Natalie Quarry Lands Movie Debut in WWII Satire
Call the Midwife Star Natalie Quarry Lands Movie Debut

Natalie Quarry, the actress celebrated for her role as Nurse Rosalind Clifford in the beloved BBC drama Call the Midwife, is embarking on a bold new cinematic venture. She has secured her movie debut in the forthcoming film Think of England, a project that ventures into provocative territory with on-screen nudity and a satirical edge.

From Poplar to the Orkney Islands

Think of England is inspired by an urban legend suggesting the UK Government commissioned pornographic films during the Second World War to bolster troop morale. Set in 1943 on the remote Orkney Islands, as the Normandy landings approach, the film delves into a darkly comedic narrative.

The plot centres on a secret unit tasked with producing intimate propaganda under intense surveillance, coercion, and fear. Natalie Quarry portrays Holly Spurring, a patriotic theatre actress reluctantly drawn into this clandestine mission, with hints that she has little choice in the matter.

A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

In the film, Winston Churchill commissions Jewish-German filmmaker Max Meyer, played by Ben Bela Böhm, to create the controversial film. Holly is paired with washed-up former film star Corporal Harry Evans, portrayed by Bandeira, whose behaviour grows increasingly erratic.

The UK premiere is scheduled for March 6 at the Glasgow Film Festival. Directed by Bafta-nominated British writer-director Richard Hawkins, the cast also includes Ronni Ancona, known for The Big Impression and her recent arrival in EastEnders as Bea Pollard.

Natalie Quarry's Journey to Call the Midwife

Natalie Quarry joined the Call the Midwife cast in its 13th season as a student midwife, a role she has cherished since her teenage years. In an interview with Virgin Radio, she shared, "I properly watched the show when I was a teenager. I feel like I was the biggest fan in the family, but they are really excited because it is something that we all used to watch together."

Her passion for the series led her to reach out to the show after drama school. She added, "When I was like 19, I was like, 'Put me in an episode!' So (episode one) is kind of a weird sort of full circle moment to me, being big-headed and being like 'I'd be good in Call the Midwife'."

Nurse Clifford's Evolution on Screen

Since her debut, Nurse Rosalind Clifford has evolved into a fully-fledged midwife, engaged with the Women's Liberation Movement, and found romance with local social worker Cyril Robinson, played by Zephryn Taitte. Their relationship has sparked discussions among the show's characters, adding depth to her storyline.

Beyond Call the Midwife, Natalie Quarry has showcased her versatility in roles on Doctors, Atlanta, and Blitz, demonstrating her range as an actress.

Call the Midwife continues to air on Sundays at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer, captivating audiences with its heartfelt narratives.
