‘We Were Liars’ Finale: How the Creators Stretched Out the Suspense of Season 1’s Big Reveal

The Prime Video series We Were Liars, adapted from E. Lockhart’s bestselling novel, has concluded its first season with a finale that reveals the tragic events of summer 16 on Beechwood Island. The show, created by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, follows narrator Cadence Sinclair Eastman as she pieces together her fragmented memories of a night that left her injured and her family’s mansion destroyed.

Author and executive producer E. Lockhart explained that the adaptation aimed to “stretch out the suspense” by giving each of the four Liars—Cadence, Gat, Johnny, and Mirren—their own perspective on the pivotal event. In the finale, the cousins and Gat set fire to Clairmont House using petrol-soaked newspapers, with each character taking a different role. Cadence handled the downstairs, Mirren took the East Wing, Johnny covered the attic, and Gat served as the escape boat captain.

The series diverges from the book in some details, such as Gat’s role in the arson, but maintains the core tragedy. Lockhart noted that the writers’ room focused on differentiating each character’s emotional journey during the fire, ensuring that the experience was unique for each Liar. The finale reveals that the fire, intended as a protest against the Sinclair family’s materialism, spiraled out of control, leading to devastating consequences.
